SOCIAL CONTROL THEORY BY TRAVIS HIRCHI

Social Control Theory or Social Bond Theory is given by the Travis Hirschi in 1969. In this theory Travis defined that the human beings commit crime when its social bond became weak. In more explainable words, it links the onset of criminality to the weakening of the ties that bind people to the society. without these ties to social group a person could be free to commit crime. Elements of the social bond, according to Hirschi are:

  • Attachment                                                                                                              It refers to person's sensitivity to and interest in others. the absence of attachment produces psychopaths who lose the ability to relate coherently to the world. Without attachment to family, respect for those in authority will not develop:
  • Commitment                                                                                                            It involves the time, energy, and effort expanded in conventional lines of action. Social Control theory holds that if people build-up a strong involvement in life, property, and reputation, they will not jeopardize their positions. Lack of commitment to conventional values weakens person's will to resist criminality as an alternative way of life.
  • Involvement                                                                                                           It explains that in family activities, schools, recreation and peers insulates a person from the potential lure of criminal behavior, while idleness enhances it.
  • Belief                                                                                                                       It says that, Absence of common belief among the individual could weaken person’s ability to resist the anti-social behavior adaptation. And the rejection of social relationships lacks the commitment of person to the conventional goals which lead person towards the deviance.
