Corruption Charges Against VC of Sindh University

Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Jamshoro registered a Rs 738m graft case against the Vice-Chancellor of Sindh University and 68 other officials. An Inquiry report was submitted to CM in April 2019 includes the vice-chancellor along with his team was found embezzling the development funds and resources of the university in various ways. He recommended the registration of graft cases against the culprits but Dr. Burfat challenged the report in the Sindh High Court Hyderabad Circuit and got a stay order. However, after almost a year in March 2020, the stay order was vacated by the court but due to the emergence of coronavirus, the chief minister could not get back to this issue and could not grant approval for registration of a case against VC and his accomplices. Currently resumed and fresh inquiry is in the process.

The Sindh University has been facing acute financial problems because of the unsustainable economical model and rampant corruption in its financial affairs by the very officers who have been entrusted to keep the smooth running of the financial system without any hindrances. Unfortunately, the University of Sindh has not proved that lucky to escape the menace of corruption. Throughout these years it faced corruption in its various developmental projects which messed the smooth functioning of the university and the lack of proper facilities damaged the learning process of students and the quality of education declined too throughout those years because of it.

the internal accountability mechanism is not that efficient to deter officials from doing corruption or white-collar crime in university and damaging its functioning.

Sindh University’s annual budget lacks sufficient allocation for the appropriate facilities in its campuses, its lack of sufficient budget for the R&D caused the current idle state where no significant research papers published in any reputable journal. The condition in Which students and teachers continued their learning is too not up to the mark. Water, Sanitation, and building maintenance too faced the ignorance of decades.

University of Sindh has to build a sustainable revenue generation system for its proper and better functioning of the educational system without depriving the students and officials from the proper and standard facilities which they deserve. And it has to build better corruption countering environment in its premises otherwise any chances of improvement will not shine much due to corruption’s devasting nature.
